World Order Lab's Indonesia-based members participates in the Public Discussion on Honoring the Steadfastness of the Palestinian Amid Genocide with the UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese, held on October 21, 2026.
The discussion focused on the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in the face of decades of occupation and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Drawing on Francesca Albanese's work as UN Special Rapporteur, she addressed how events in Gaza are documented and how that documentation is carried through at the United Nations, which depends heavily on the political will of state actors. The discussion also covered the role of international law in restraining grave political abuses, the limits of its enforcement, and the importance of solidarity across civil society in challenging impunity.
What are participating World Order Lab members' key takeaways and observations from the forum?
"Some argue that international law is no longer relevant, but I disagree. I strongly agree with Francesca Albanese in the discussion, as international law remains the primary guide for how states and other international actors should behave. Rather than boycotting or dismissing courts like the ICJ and ICC, we should embrace them more fully. Furthermore, we must press the UN — including through the General Assembly when the Security Council is blocked — to act on the ICJ's advisory opinions and to support the ICC's work." --- Muhammad Izzuddin Al Haq, Executive Director & Chief Editor of The Meridian
"The seminar was an ‘evening of appreciation’ for the Indonesian people, who have remained steadfast in their support for the Palestinian struggle against decades of Israeli occupation. Francesca Albanese’s presentation also showed that documenting the events in Gaza and putting that documentation to use at the UN depends on the commitment of state actors, or political will. It also reaffirmed the continued importance of international law in restraining heinous political acts, even though its implementation is not like a ‘remote control’ that can change the situation easily." --- Alwi Akbar, Senior Analyst (Coordinator), Middle East & North Africa Desk

"The struggle for Palestine is about ending genocide and occupation while defending international law, human rights, and humanity. It calls for civil society coordination, strategic collective action, as well as sustained pressure to challenge impunity. International law must be enforced, and meaningful solidarity requires unity across differences. As Francesca Albanese stressed, respecting international law starts with a constitution that refuses colonialism — because colonialism is the institutional elevation of patriarchy." --- Anna Tasya Nurfitriani, Senior Analyst, Transatlantic Desk
