Chiene Ryne Blanza Baldebrin
Analyst, Southeast Asia Desk & Philippines Liaison Officer
Chiene Ryne Blanza Baldebrin is Analyst with the Southeast Asia Desk & Philippines Liaison Officer at World Order Lab. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Diplomacy and International Relations with a specialization in East and Southeast Asian Studies at the Dr Rosita G Leong School of Social Sciences, Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.
Her work in international relations focuses on how states pursue their interests within regional and international systems, particularly through diplomacy, negotiation, regional cooperation, and security policy. She has examined the strategic interests of states in the South China Sea, Philippine relations with neighboring countries, and the role of external powers in shaping regional affairs. Her work also considers how diplomacy, competing national interests, and external power involvement influence the foreign policy choices available to states, particularly in Southeast Asia.
Chiene's interest in peacebuilding developed through academic work on conflict analysis and the Bangsamoro peace process. She is particularly interested in how conflicting parties identify and negotiate their underlying interests, how institutions can support political settlements, and how diplomatic engagement can create conditions for sustained cooperation.
In 2026, Chiene completed an internship with the Department of Migrant Workers, Institute for Advanced and Strategic Studies on Migration and Development, where she contributed to ongoing research on the recruitment and overseas employment experiences of migrant workers, particularly through developing research variables and analytical frameworks. This experience strengthened her interest in migration governance, particularly the ways states regulate labor mobility and migration policies while responding to the protection needs of migrant workers.
Beyond her research experience, Chiene has developed organizational and leadership experience through her work with the Ateneo Student Judicial Court, where she served as Deputy Court Administrator and co-authored and formalized the organization's Code of Internal Procedures.
Chiene hopes to pursue a career involving law, foreign policy, diplomacy, or international affairs, with a particular interest in issues affecting Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific. She is interested in further developing research that connects geopolitical developments with questions of human security, migration, and peacebuilding, while gaining a deeper understanding of how states and regional institutions respond to complex security and governance challenges.
Outside her academic and professional work, Chiene has a longstanding interest in literature and creative writing. She is particularly drawn to works that explore gender, religion, identity, and social expectations, and she continues to write alongside her studies. She also has an interest in East Asian and European studies and is currently developing her proficiency in Japanese and Spanish alongside her fluency in English, Filipino, and Ilocano.
Language: Filipino (Native), English (C1), Spanish (A2), Japanese (A1).
